In the second ODI against West Indies at the SCG on Sunday (February 4), Sean Abbott’s exceptional all-round performance (69 with the bat and 3-40 with the ball) played a pivotal role in Australia’s series-clinching victory.

Despite an early collapse, Abbott’s resilient batting, combined with contributions from Matthew Short and Aaron Hardie, propelled the hosts to a competitive total of 258/9.

Josh Hazlewood’s three-wicket haul, complemented by Abbott’s three scalps, ensured West Indies struggled to mount a substantial challenge and were eventually bundled out for 175.

The West Indies’ chase faced early setbacks with Abbott dismissing Kjorn Ottley and Alick Athanaze falling to Aaron Hardie.

Despite efforts from Shai Hope and Keacy Carty to revive the innings with a half-century stand, Hazlewood and Abbott continued to strike crucial blows.

Abbott, in particular, showcased his all-around prowess by breaking partnerships and finishing with three wickets, while Adam Zampa and other Australian bowlers also contributed with at least a wicket each.

In Australia’s innings, early wickets fell to Alzarri Joseph, but Cameron Green’s aggressive batting provided some resistance.

However, wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with Abbott and Sutherland’s late partnership adding crucial runs and propelling the hosts past 250.

Abbott’s quick fifty, including two sixes off Romario Shepherd, was instrumental in setting a challenging target for West Indies.

Despite the challenges, Abbott’s remarkable contributions with both bat and ball played a decisive role in securing Australia’s victory and sealing the series with one game remaining.
