On Sunday, 28th January, the International Cricket Council (ICC) lifted the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket, effective immediately. The board had been suspended on 10th November due to a “serious breach of its obligations as a Member, particularly in failing to manage its affairs autonomously and preventing government interference in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.”

This decision followed a comprehensive 112-page report by Sri Lanka’s auditor general, accusing the board of poor governance, corruption, and financial mismanagement. In the wake of the report, the Sri Lankan board, led by President Shammi Silva, was dismissed during the 2023 World Cup. Subsequent legal appeals resulted in the temporary reinstatement and subsequent dismissal of the board before it resumed duties again.

Amidst the tumult within the Sri Lankan board, the ICC board convened on 21st November, opting to relocate the Under-19 World Cup 2024 from Sri Lanka to South Africa, originally designated as the host nation.

“The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and is now satisfied that SLC is no longer in breach of membership obligations,” the ICC stated in a release on Sunday.
