SOUTH AFRICA v/s NEW ZEALAND, 2024

FIRST TEST

Jamieson and Santner seal a convincing victory

South Africa suffered a heavy defeat by 281 runs.

The new-look South African side endured a challenging introduction to Test cricket as New Zealand secured a commanding 281-run victory by the end of the fourth day in Mount Maunganui.

Despite South Africa’s potential improvement as the game progressed, it proved insufficient against New Zealand’s dominance.

Kyle Jamieson claimed four wickets, while Mitchell Santner bagged three as South Africa were dismissed for 247 in their chase.

After opting not to enforce the follow-on, New Zealand declared overnight, setting South Africa a daunting target of 529 to win within six sessions.

Led by Jamieson, the home side’s bowling attack efficiently wrapped up the game, requiring less than half of the allocated time to take a 1-0 series lead.

The day commenced with Tim Southee dismantling Neil Brand’s defense with an inswinger, followed by Matt Henry dismissing Edward Moore with a well-directed delivery.

Despite a brief resistance from Raynard van Tonder and Zubayr Hamza until lunch, South Africa faltered post-lunch as Jamieson broke through their defenses.

Jamieson’s early strikes paved the way for New Zealand’s eventual triumph.

Despite partnerships from David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen, South Africa failed to mount a significant challenge.

Bedingham’s aggressive approach backfired, leading to his dismissal by Jamieson, while Petersen fell victim to a short ball.

Ruan de Swardt’s resistance was in vain as Santner wrapped up the South African innings, sealing New Zealand’s victory.

In summary, South Africa’s total of 162 and 247 in both innings fell short of New Zealand’s formidable 511 and 179/4 declared, resulting in a comprehensive 281-run win for the hosts.
