New Zealand extends their lead beyond 500 runs as Williamson notches up another century

Kane Williamson notched his 31st Test century.

In the opening Test against South Africa at Mount Maunganui, Kane Williamson notched his second century of the match as New Zealand’s lead surged past 500 runs by stumps on Day 3.

Despite having the opportunity to enforce the follow-on after dismissing South Africa for a mere 162 in the first innings, the home side opted to continue piling on the runs.

They concluded the day at 179 for 4, with Williamson contributing 109 of those runs.

The day commenced with South Africa at 80 for 4, trailing significantly following New Zealand’s formidable total of 511 in the first innings.

Despite a defiant effort from Keegan Petersen, South Africa lost three wickets in the morning session, including Petersen’s dismissal to New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra.

From 152 for 8, South Africa’s innings concluded for just 10 more runs, falling well short of the home side’s total.

Opting to bat again, New Zealand faced an early setback when Dane Peterson dismissed Tom Latham with a well-directed delivery.

However, Devon Conway and Williamson steadied the innings with a fluent partnership of 92 runs.

Despite a dropped catch by Edward Moore, Williamson’s luck ran out soon after when he was caught off Neil Brand’s delivery after scoring his 31st Test century.

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell guided New Zealand to stumps with a commanding lead of 528 runs.
