Afghanistan’s versatile all-rounder, Azmatullah Omarzai, believes that his stint with the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) will play a pivotal role in shaping his readiness for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled in the USA and West Indies in June 2024.

“I’m confident that participating in the IPL will significantly contribute to my World Cup preparations.

The IPL is a top-tier league where seasoned players from around the world showcase their skills.

Gaining experience in such a competitive environment will undoubtedly benefit me in handling the pressure situations that are expected in the T20 World Cup,” Omarzai expressed during an exclusive interview with Cricpulse

Elaborating on his approach for the IPL, Omarzai emphasized a simple yet effective strategy, saying, “My plan remains straightforward, irrespective of whether it’s the IPL, BPL, or any form of cricket.

I believe in my skills, work hard, and maintain a positive mindset.

As I continue practicing, putting in the effort, and participating in matches, I aim to carry a strong mindset into the IPL.”

Reflecting on his connection with the Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Omarzai acknowledged the team’s role in shaping his career.

“Riders hold a special place in my heart.

They provided me with opportunities, such as bowling with the new ball and a promotion in the batting order during the last BPL edition.

This experience translated into my performances for the national team, where I continued to showcase my potential,” he stated.

Omarzai also shed light on his association with Bangladesh, revealing that he received permission to pursue cricket professionally after witnessing Afghanistan’s victory over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup in 2015.

“My family granted me permission to play professional cricket after we watched Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in the Asia Cup.

Since then, Bangladesh has held a special place in my cricketing journey,” he shared.

Dispelling misconceptions about the conditions in Afghanistan, Omarzai emphasized that while challenges exist, life goes on, and cricket facilities are improving.

“People assume conditions are very tough in Afghanistan, but we lead normal lives.

We go out even after sunset, and the situation is normal.

Although there are shortcomings in cricket facilities, efforts are being made to improve, with plans for hosting international matches and additional grounds being developed,” he clarified.

Attributing Afghanistan’s improved performance to head coach Jonathan Trott, Omarzai highlighted Trott’s emphasis on unity and a collective mindset.

“Trott instilled the belief that we play for Afghanistan, emphasizing unity and teamwork.

He brought us together as one family, and that cohesion has played a significant role in our improved performance,” Omarzai remarked.

Regarding Afghanistan’s success in the last ODI World Cup, Omarzai credited the achievements to long-term planning rather than a brief camp before the tournament.

“Preparation for the World Cup starts two to three years in advance.

Our management provided us with more opportunities, starting in 2021, which contributed to our success in the World Cup,” he concluded.
