On Saturday, February 3, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced that former spin bowling coach Rangana Herath has turned down the opportunity to work with them again by rejecting the offered contract.

Earlier, Herath informed Cricpulse that he had received an offer from the BCB and would make a final decision after consulting with his legal advisors.

However, he emphasized his eagerness to serve as a spin mentor, focusing on guiding slow bowlers across different age groups, rather than taking on the role of the national cricket team’s spin coach.

The revised offer outlined that Herath would be required to spend 200 days in Bangladesh, a departure from his previous role as the national team’s spin coach on an annual basis.

Jalal Yunus, the BCB cricket operations chairman, revealed during a press conference following a meeting of the foreign coach recruiting committee that Herath had declined the offer and expressed his reluctance to return and engage in Bangladesh cricket.

Yunus stated, “Herath is not with us.

The offer we made to him (Herath) he did not accept, and so he is no more with us.”

The BCB recently formed a five-member foreign coach recruiting committee, including former national captains Khaled Mahmud and Naimur Rahman, along with BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury and BCB programme head David Moore.

Yunus is also a member of the committee.

Yunus mentioned that they have shortlisted a few coaches and will conduct virtual interviews on February 6 for various coaching positions that became vacant with the conclusion of existing contracts for foreign coaches.

The positions include strength and conditioning coach, batting coach, pace bowling coach, and analyst for the national cricket team, as well as the national team’s assistant coach for the next two years. The head coach is expected to arrive on February 20.
