Daryl Mitchell’s absence has been confirmed for the second Test against South Africa and the upcoming T20Is against Australia, as he continues to manage a lingering foot injury.

The versatile batting all-rounder has been sidelined from the forthcoming matches due to recent discomfort.

However, the 32-year-old, who holds a significant role in the middle order across all formats, is anticipated to recover fully in time for New Zealand’s Test series against Australia, commencing on February 29.

“Daryl is an integral part of the squad across formats, and ensuring his fitness is paramount considering the upcoming fixtures,” stated head coach Gary Stead.

“Given the upcoming schedule, we believe it’s prudent for Daryl to undergo a rehabilitation phase now.”

Will O’Rourke, who was previously added to the squad for the second Test, will step in for Mitchell.

Whether O’Rourke will make his debut or if New Zealand will opt for Will Young to replace Mitchell in the XI remains uncertain.

Furthermore, Stead confirmed that regular captain Kane Williamson is likely to miss the three-match T20I series against Australia due to his wife’s pregnancy.

Additionally, pacer Trent Boult is being considered for selection.

“Given Kane’s family situation, it’s improbable for him to be available during the T20s,” Stead explained.

“As for Trent, he’s available for selection, and we’re currently discussing potential lineups.

Hopefully, we’ll finalize our decisions in the next couple of days.”
