ENGLAND v/s INDIA TEST SERIES, 2024

Dravid expresses disappointment as young batters miss opportunities to capitalize on available runs once more

While Iyer made valuable contributions with his fielding, he is still seeking to make an impact with the bat in the ongoing series.

In India’s victorious second Test in Vizag, Jasprit Bumrah showcased brilliance, complemented by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s double hundred in the first innings and Shubman Gill’s century in the second innings.

However, apart from these noteworthy performances, none of the other batters managed to cross fifty in either inning, leaving India unable to outscore the opposition despite being in a favorable position.

Head coach Rahul Dravid acknowledged that India fell short of runs in the second Test, similar to their loss in Hyderabad, attributing it to the relative inexperience of the batting order in Test cricket.

Dravid emphasized the importance of reading the game situation and making the right decisions, understanding when to apply pressure and when to adopt a more conservative approach.

Jaiswal’s 209 accounted for a significant portion of India’s first innings total of 396, with Gill’s 34 being the next highest score.

In the second innings, Gill’s brisk 104 constituted nearly 41 percent of India’s total, with Axar Patel’s 45 being the next highest contribution.

Dravid expressed the view that India left runs on the board in both innings, emphasizing the need for young batsmen to adapt quickly to Test cricket.

Despite Bumrah’s exceptional spell, which resulted in figures of 6-45 and gave India a 143-run lead after the first innings, the pressure remained.

In the second innings, India lost early wickets and, despite a partnership between Gill and Shreyas Iyer, lost their last six wickets cheaply.

Dravid acknowledged the challenge of forcing the play during the game and admitted that India couldn’t capitalize on partnerships enough.

He praised England for playing fantastic cricket in both Tests, acknowledging the tough series and highlighting the experience in the English squad.

Regarding England’s aggressive batting style, referred to as “Bazball,” Dravid recognized the skill and ability required for such shots.

He commended England for finding a balance between attack and defense, acknowledging the challenge India faces against their aggressive approach.
