ENGLAND v/s INDIA, 2024

Shubman Gill’s century extends India’s lead

Shubman Gill was dismissed for 104.

Similar to the first innings, India heavily relied on a singular batsman to accumulate the majority of their runs, as Shubman Gill notched up a century with a score of 104.

However, the rest of the batting lineup faced challenges, succumbing to England’s effective bowling efforts.

In the second session, India lost more wickets while Gill achieved his third Test century.

Overcoming a shaky start, Gill settled into a fluent innings.

On the third morning, India aimed to extend their lead of 171, but James Anderson, at 41 years old, set the tone early with a delivery that nipped away and outfoxed Rohit Sharma’s defense.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the next to fall, chasing a delivery angled across, providing England with an ideal start.

Gill, however, survived two close LBW reviews, the first saved by an inside edge against Tom Hartley, and the second by some extra bounce against Anderson.

Subsequently, Gill and Shreyas Iyer mounted a resilient fight, forming an 81-run partnership.

Despite Gill reaching a fifty after facing significant pressure, Iyer couldn’t convert another promising start, getting caught by Ben Stokes after a miscued hit against Hartley.

Debutant Rajat Patidar fell shortly after, caught by Ben Foakes, leaving India in a challenging position with four wickets lost before Lunch.

After the break, Gill and Axar displayed sensible cricket, adding an 89-run partnership that increased India’s lead.

Gill, under pressure, achieved a well-deserved century.

However, his attempt to accelerate the scoring ended with a gloved reverse sweep off Shoaib Bashir.

India faced further setbacks when Axar was trapped LBW by Hartley while attempting to whip one across.

R Ashwin and KS Bharat defended resiliently until the break, with India leading by 370 runs.
