Ricky Ponting assumes the role of head coach for Washington Freedom

Ponting will join forces with former fierce rival Dale Steyn, along with fellow countrymen Michael Klinger and Burt Cockley, in the support staff.

Washington Freedom have announced the appointment of former Australian captain and current Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting as their new head coach.

This news comes shortly after Dhiraj Malhotra’s appointment as the franchise’s first CEO, marking the revival of their longstanding working relationship.

Ponting will succeed veteran Australian coach Greg Shipperd and will collaborate with one-time fierce rival Dale Steyn, along with fellow countrymen Michael Klinger and Burt Cockley, who are part of the support staff.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining Washington Freedom in 2024.

Cricket is truly on the rise in the US, and I’m eager to contribute to Major League Cricket.

I’ve been impressed by everyone involved at Washington Freedom, and although it’s a bit surreal to be stepping into the shoes of my friend Greg Shipperd, I’m confident in our ability to build on his foundation and lead the team towards success in the upcoming season,” said Ponting upon his appointment.

Reflecting on the franchise’s aspirations, owner Sanjay Govil expressed optimism about the future, highlighting the success of MLC’s inaugural season and the community’s growing passion for cricket.

“Ricky’s legendary status, leadership qualities, and dedication to talent development perfectly align with our goals.

His appointment reinforces our commitment to enhancing cricket’s profile in the US and nurturing local talent,” Govil added.

Ponting’s appointment signifies an increase in Australian influence within the franchise, following a strategic alliance with Cricket NSW.

As part of this partnership, Freedom sent American-based players such as Andries Gous and Jacobus Pienaar to Sydney in January for training within the Cricket NSW ecosystem.
