Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal formed a resilient century partnership, guiding Sri Lanka to an 89-run lead against Afghanistan. The duo’s solid batting display helped Sri Lanka recover from early setbacks, putting them in a strong position in the ongoing Test match.

Afghanistan had a wicketless second session, failing to make further breakthroughs after dismissing the hosts’ top three batsmen in the morning session. Despite the early success, Sri Lanka’s middle order proved resilient, preventing Afghanistan from making further inroads.

Sri Lanka reached 287 for 3, with Angelo Mathews scoring 79* and Dinesh Chandimal contributing 68*.

This puts them ahead by 89 runs against Afghanistan, who scored 198 in their first innings.

Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal solidified their partnership, both surpassing fifty, in a wicketless second session against Afghanistan on the second afternoon.

The spinners from Afghanistan, especially debutant left-arm spinner Zia-ur-Rehman and leg spinner Qais Ahmed, were played comfortably by the Sri Lankan duo on a surface that provided little menace.

Mathews and Chandimal’s partnership reached 139 by tea, taking Sri Lanka 89 runs ahead with seven wickets in hand.

Mathews, facing his 100th ball, reached his 41st fifty and was unbeaten on 79, while Chandimal contributed 68 off 116 deliveries with seven boundaries at the break.

In the morning session, Afghanistan had removed Sri Lanka’s top three, but Karunaratne’s quick scoring was halted at 77 when he clipped a full toss from Qais to short midwicket.
