AFGHANISTAN v/s SRI LANKA 2024

ASALANKA AND HASARANGA SHINE IN SRI LANKA’s SERIES-CLINCHING VICTORY

Hasaranga dismantled Afghanistan’s middle order with a crafty spell.

Charith Asalanka’s explosive knock (97* off 74) and Wanindu Hasaranga’s devastating spell (4-27) were the standout performances as Sri Lanka dominated Afghanistan, securing a commanding 155-run victory in the second ODI at Pallekele on Sunday (February 11).

With this win, Sri Lanka sealed the series with a game to spare.

Sri Lanka displayed a strong batting effort, with three other batsmen – Kusal Mendis (61 off 65), Sadeera Samarawickrama (52 off 61), and Janith Liyanage (50 off 48) – contributing half-centuries.

Despite Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran’s resistance for Afghanistan, once their partnership was broken, the visitors’ innings fell apart.

In their innings, Sri Lanka faced disciplined bowling from Afghanistan, resulting in the early dismissals of the openers.

However, Mendis and Samarawickrama steadied the ship with a century stand before falling in quick succession.

Asalanka and Liyanage then took charge, adding 111 runs at a brisk pace.

Asalanka’s aggressive batting, coupled with Liyanage’s support, propelled Sri Lanka to a competitive total.

In response, Afghanistan’s top order showed resilience, with Zadran and Shah forming a crucial partnership.

However, their dismissals, particularly to Asitha Fernando and Hasaranga, triggered a collapse in Afghanistan’s innings.

Hasaranga’s exceptional bowling performance, supported by Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka, ensured Sri Lanka’s victory.

Despite Afghanistan’s initial promise, their innings crumbled after the partnership between Zadran and Shah was broken.

Hasaranga’s brilliance sliced through Afghanistan’s middle order, turning what seemed like a close contest into a one-sided affair in favor of Sri Lanka.
