NISSANKA ACHIEVES A NEW MILESTONE FOR SRI LANKA

Pathum Nissanka made history by becoming the first Sri Lankan batsman and the tenth player overall to achieve a double century in ODIs.

Nissanka’s remarkable innings surpassed Sanath Jayasuriya’s previous Sri Lankan record of 189 runs against India in Sharjah in 2000.

Additionally, his feat eclipsed the previous highest individual score in ODIs in Sri Lanka, which was Kumar Sangakkara’s 169 against South Africa in Colombo RPS in 2013.

TOP INDIVIDUAL SCORES FOR SRI LANKA

Nissanka’s double century off 136 balls places him as the third quickest to achieve the milestone in ODIs, following Ishan Kishan (126 balls vs Bangladesh, Chattogram, 2022) and Glenn Maxwell (128 balls vs Afghanistan, 2023).

Pathum Nissanka’s impressive tally of 8 sixes places him joint fifth in terms of the most sixes hit by a Sri Lankan batsman in ODIs.

Moreover, it stands as the highest number of sixes hit by a Sri Lankan in a home ODI, surpassing the previous record of six, achieved by three different players.

To put this into perspective, Nissanka had only managed to hit nine sixes across 49 innings prior to this remarkable knock.

In ODIs for Afghanistan, only two individual scores surpass Azmatullah Omarzai’s unbeaten 149:

Ibrahim Zadran’s 162 and Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 151.

Mohammad Nabi’s 136 ranks fifth on this list.

Azmatullah’s 149* stands as the highest maiden century for an Afghan batsman, surpassing Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 127 against Ireland in Abu Dhabi in 2021 on his debut.

TOP INDIVIDUAL SCORES FOR AFGHANISTAN IN ODIs

Azmatullah’s unbeaten 149* stands as one of the joint highest scores in a losing run chase in ODIs, matching Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 149* against India in Nagpur in 2007.

This marks the seventh occasion in ODI history where a team ended in defeat in a run chase despite two batters scoring centuries, and notably, the first instance where both centurions scored 120 or more.

The 242-run partnership between Azmatullah and Nabi stands as the second-highest for any team for the sixth wicket or below in ODIs, trailing only the 267-run partnership by Grant Elliot and Luke Ronchi for the sixth wicket against Sri Lanka in Dunedin in 2015.

Additionally, it ranks as the second-highest partnership for Afghanistan for any wicket, following the 256-run stand by Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz for the opening wicket against Bangladesh in Chattogram last year.

The 242-run partnership between Azmatullah and Nabi ranks as the highest partnership for the sixth wicket or below in ODIs.

It is also the highest stand for any side ending in a losing cause, surpassing the previous record of 235 by Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs against India in Kochi in 2000.

Mohammad Nabi took 89 innings to score his second ODI century, with his first century scored in 2015.

This interval ranks as the third longest stretch between two ODI hundreds for a player since the beginning of 2010, trailing only Suresh Raina’s 95 innings and Dinesh Chandimal’s 91 innings.

Moreover, at 39 years and 39 days old, he becomes the oldest player to score an ODI century for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s addition of 284 runs is the highest by any side in an ODI innings after the fall of the fifth wicket, surpassing New Zealand’s 267 runs against Sri Lanka in Dunedin in 2015.

This achievement also marks the most runs added by a team in an innings after being five wickets down for 60 runs or fewer, exceeding the previous record of 252 by Africa XI against Asia XI in Bengaluru in 2007 (31/5 to 283).

Afghanistan’s total of 339/6 is their highest team score in ODIs, eclipsing their previous best of 338 against Ireland in Greater Noida in 2017.

Additionally, this match marks the first instance of Afghanistan scoring 300 or more runs while batting second, surpassing their previous highest of 289 against the same opposition during the Asia Cup 2023 in Lahore.

The 720 runs scored in the match represent the highest aggregate in an ODI in Sri Lanka, surpassing the previous record of 652 runs in the World Cup 1996 match between the hosts and Kenya in Kandy.

Furthermore, the 89 boundaries in the match establish a new record for ODIs in Sri Lanka, while the 21 maximums equal the number hit in the aforementioned World Cup game.
