According to a statement released by the cricket board, Hamilton Masakadza has resigned from his position as Zimbabwe’s Director of Cricket, attributing his decision to step down to the team’s failure to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Masakadza, who assumed the role shortly after retiring from all cricket formats in October 2019, will remain engaged with Zimbabwe Cricket in alternate capacities, as confirmed by the board.

In his resignation letter, Masakadza expressed his deep contemplation of the achievements and setbacks during his tenure.

He acknowledged the progress made but emphasized the disappointment of Zimbabwe’s exclusion from the upcoming T20 World Cup after a surprising loss to Uganda, accepting full responsibility as Director of Cricket.

Despite the difficulty of his decision, Masakadza reiterated his unwavering commitment to Zimbabwe Cricket, expressing interest in serving in different capacities, particularly with the organization preparing to host the Men’s Under-19 World Cup in 2026 and the Men’s 50-over World Cup in 2027.

Givemore Makoni, Managing Director of ZC, praised Masakadza’s legendary status in cricket and acknowledged his significant contributions, both on and off the field.

Makoni highlighted Masakadza’s efforts in nurturing and developing the next generation of players and acknowledged the progress made by Zimbabwe teams under his leadership.

He expressed hope that the sport would continue to benefit from Masakadza’s expertise and knowledge.

During Masakadza’s four-year tenure, Zimbabwe successfully qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, reaching the Super 12s stage.

Additionally, Masakadza played a pivotal role in introducing new tournaments such as the National Premier League and the Zim Afro T10 league for men, along with two women’s provincial competitions, the Fifty50 Challenge and the Women’s T20 Cup.
