SRH Confirmed for IPL 2024 Playoffs Following Washout in Hyderabad
The washout on Thursday (May 16) in Hyderabad confirmed SRH as the third team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, joining KKR and RR.
This also officially ended DC’s campaign, leaving RCB and CSK to vie for the final playoff spot.
Playoffs Equation Riding on RCB-CSK Encounter
A win for CSK should secure their spot in the playoffs.
For RCB, the scenario is more complex.
If RCB bat first and score 200, they need to beat CSK by 18 runs or more.
If they chase, they must achieve a target of 201 in 18.5 overs or less.
Rain is forecasted for Bengaluru on Saturday, which could complicate matters for RCB more than CSK.
In a shortened five-over match, if CSK set a target of 75, RCB must chase it in 3.1 overs or restrict CSK to 57 or below if they bat first and score 75.
Who Will Join KKR in Qualifier 1?
RR, SRH, and LSG all have a realistic chance to finish second.
RR’s path is straightforward: beat KKR on Sunday to secure a top-two finish.
If RR lose, they need both CSK and SRH to lose their final games.
If RR lose to KKR and stay on 16 points, a win against PBKS would ensure SRH’s spot in Qualifier 1.
In case of KKR beating RR and SRH’s game getting washed out (and CSK not winning in Bengaluru), RR will progress to Q1 due to more wins.
If SRH lose to PBKS, they cannot finish in the top two.
CSK can finish second only if they beat RCB, KKR beat RR, and SRH do not win against PBKS.
If all three teams end up with 16 points each, CSK will advance to Q1 due to their superior NRR over RR and more outright wins than SRH.
Do LSG Stand a Chance?
Mathematically, yes, but practically, their season is likely over.
They can at best finish with 14 points and will be eliminated if CSK beats RCB.
If RCB wins against CSK and LSG beats MI, all three teams will end up with 14 points.
For LSG to top the NRR, they need a massive win over MI, by around 310 runs, if RCB beats CSK by exactly 18 runs.
If LSG field first against MI, they are immediately eliminated.
