TATA IPL 2024: Marcus Stoinis has played a brilliant knock for his team LSG against MI

Marcus Stoinis wielded the bat to notch up 62 runs and showcased his bowling prowess by bagging figures of 1 for 19 with the ball.

Mumbai Indians scored 144/7 in 20 overs, where as Lucknow Super Giants scored 145/6 in 19.2 overs.

So, finally Lucknow Super Giants beat Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets.

In a refreshing departure from the recent hit-a-thons in IPL 2024, Lucknow Super Giants secured a thrilling victory over Mumbai Indians by four wickets on a slow Lucknow pitch.

Marcus Stoinis and KL Rahul set the stage with a crucial 58-run partnership for the second wicket in 6.4 overs, showcasing their all-round brilliance after restricting the visitors to 144/7.

Despite MI’s Jasprit Bumrah (0-17) and Hardik Pandya (2-26) putting up a fierce fight with their economical bowling, it was Lucknow’s resilience that clinched the two points in the end.

This win propelled LSG to the third position on the points table with 12 points from 10 games, nudging CSK down to fourth.

The defining factor: Powerplay

As the age-old adage suggests, losing early wickets often spells trouble, and MI experienced just that as four of their top-five batsmen were dismissed within 5.2 overs, leaving the middle and lower order with a daunting task.

In contrast, LSG capitalized on a watchful start and seized the initiative during the powerplay.

Despite facing swing from Nuwan Thushara and Bumrah, the Stoinis-Rahul duo found their rhythm in the first half of the powerplay and then unleashed an onslaught against Gerald Coetzee and Thushara, swiftly surpassing the required run rate.

Mumbai Indians

Powerplay

MI: 28/4 (RR 4.67, 4s/6s: 2/1)

On his birthday, Rohit Sharma handed a simple catch to short cover, falling once again to a left-arm pacer this IPL.

Stoinis, deployed to counter Ishan Kishan, instead dismissed Surya Kumar Yadav with a well-disguised slower ball – a recurring theme this season.

Tilak Varma’s confusion amidst an LBW appeal led to a run-out at the non-striker’s end.

MI’s skipper departed on the first ball, attempting an expansive drive only to edge behind to Rahul.

MI struggled, playing out 17 dot balls and losing more wickets than hitting boundaries.

Middle Overs

MI: 68/1 (RR: 7.55, 4s/6s: 6/2)

It was a slow fifty partnership – 53 off 56 balls – but crucial for MI’s recovery.

Nehal Wadhera (46 off 41) and Ishan Kishan (32 off 36) steadied the ship.

Kishan found the boundary ropes, albeit sparingly against the spinners.

But he fell to a top-edged sweep off a Ravi Bishnoi googly.

Wadhera unleashed back-to-back sixes off Mayank Yadav, boosting MI’s total.

Death Overs

MI: 48/2 (RR: 9.6, 4s/6s: 4/1)

With Wadhera accelerating alongside Tim David, MI aimed for a formidable total.

However, Mohsin Khan’s perfect yorker denied Wadhera a fifty.

Mohammad Nabi’s disappointment continued, but David’s onslaught against Mohsin – three fours and a six – salvaged MI’s innings, pushing them to 144/7.

Lucknow Super Giants

Powerplay

LSG: 52/1 (RR: 8.67, 4s/6s: 6/2)

Arshin Kulkarni’s IPL debut ended with a golden duck, trapped LBW by Thushara.

However, Stoinis and Rahul propelled LSG, with Stoinis smashing two boundaries off Coetzee’s first over, and Rahul dominating Thushara with 6, 4, 4.

Even Bumrah was dispatched for a six by Stoinis, setting a solid foundation.

Middle Overs

LSG: 64/3 (RR: 7.11, 4s/6s: 6/1)

Despite a slight slowdown, LSG benefited from the earlier partnership.

Pandya removed Stoinis and Turner with quick strikes.

Stonis capitalized against spin, particularly targeting Chawla and Nabi, scoring 29 runs in 16 balls before falling to Chawla.

Death Overs

LSG: 29/2 (RR 6.69, 4s: 2)

LSG faced a challenge with two new batters and a required rate of 30 in six overs.

Bumrah’s tight 17th over created pressure, leading to Turner’s dismissal.

Badoni managed a couple of boundaries but fell to Pandya.

Pooran survived a scare, finding an inside edge to the boundary, aiding LSG’s victory.

What’s on the horizon?

LSG is set to venture eastward, locking horns with KKR at the iconic Eden Gardens on Sunday, while MI will return home for their upcoming match against the Shreyas Iyer-led squad, scheduled for Friday.
