Mahmudullah, the seasoned batsman who missed out on selection for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, has secured a spot in Bangladesh’s squad for the forthcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA/West Indies.
The 15-member squad will be under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, with Taskin Ahmed appointed as his deputy.
While concerns loom over Taskin’s fitness due to an injury, Hasan Mahmud has been called up as a replacement for the upcoming T20Is against USA before the World Cup.
However, selectors express optimism regarding Taskin’s recovery in time for the marquee event, granting him the additional responsibility of vice-captaincy.
Hasan Mahmud and Afif Hossain have been designated as reserves.
Mahmudullah’s return undoubtedly takes center stage within the squad.
The 38-year-old had been absent from the T20I scene since September 2022 but marked a comeback earlier this year during the home series against Sri Lanka in March.
His consistent performances in subsequent T20Is against Zimbabwe positioned him as a strong contender for the final squad.
However, uncertainties lingered regarding his selection, given the unpredictable tendencies of Bangladesh’s selection committee, particularly concerning senior players.
Mustafizur Rahman spearheads the pace attack, complemented by the likes of Shoriful Islam and Taskin.
Bowling all-rounder Tanzim Sakib clinched the fourth seamer spot, edging past Mohammad Saifuddin.
“We focused on Saifuddin due to his yorker bowling ability.
However, his performance did not reflect this aspect, indicating room for improvement.
Although Saifuddin was on our radar, Tanzim’s recent performances and dedication put him ahead,” remarked BCB chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain.
The squad also boasts three specialist spin bowling options in Mahedi Hasan, Tanvir Islam, and Rishad Hossain, alongside the seasoned experience of Shakib Al Hasan.
