Sybrand Engelbrecht has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a short yet impactful stint with the Netherlands men’s national team.

The 35-year-old, who had previously retired from professional cricket in 2016, made his international debut with the Netherlands side during the ODI World Cup in India last year.

Hailing from Johannesburg in 1988, Engelbrecht initially gained recognition as a talented young player in South Africa.

He made his mark representing them in the 2008 U19 World Cup, where he earned fame for his stunning catch at backward point.

Engelbrecht went on to amass experience, featuring in 54 first-class, 57 List A, and 45 T20 matches in South Africa’s domestic cricket scene.

Despite his early achievements, he shifted his focus to financial and project management and eventually relocated to the Netherlands.

However, his love for cricket persisted, and he continued to pursue it with the Voorburg CC, guiding them to the Dutch Topklasse championship title in 2023.

During the ODI World Cup in 2023, Engelbrecht emerged as one of the Netherlands’ standout performers, scoring 300 runs at an impressive average of 37.5.

Notably, he struck a notable 70-run innings against Sri Lanka.

Engelbrecht’s international journey extended to the T20 World Cup held in the United States and the West Indies this year.

Across four innings, he contributed 98 runs at an average of 24.5 and showcased his fielding prowess with a remarkable outfield catch against Bangladesh.
