Former Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne has been hospitalized following a road accident in Thrippane, Anuradhapura, as confirmed by local police to Ada Derana.

The 34-year-old cricketer was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital with “minor injuries sustained in the accident,” according to police reports.

Authorities further stated that the vehicle carrying Thirimanne had three other individuals on board.

The accident occurred when the vehicle collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction at around 07:45 on Thursday morning.

Lahiru Thirimanne, a former Sri Lankan cricketer, showcased his talent across all three formats of the game.

Throughout his international career for the Lankan Lions, he participated in 44 Test matches, 127 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 26 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

According to reports, Thirimanne’s car collided with a lorry near the 117-mile post area in Thirappane.

As reported by Newswire, the former Sri Lanka international sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Notably, Thirimanne is currently playing for New York Superstar Strikers in the ongoing Legend Cricket Trophy.

The Superstar Strikers released a statement confirming that Thirimanne is safe and the accident occurred while he was visiting a temple in the area.

“We wish to inform you that Lahiru Thirimanne and his family were involved in a small car accident while visiting the temple.

Thankfully, they have been admitted to the hospital for observation.

“Fortunately, following a thorough medical assessment, we can confirm that they are all safe and sound, with no cause for concern.

We appreciate the outpouring of concern and support from everyone during this time.

“We kindly request respect for their privacy as they recover,” read the statement.

Thirimanne amassed 2088 runs in 44 Tests he played, averaging 26.43, with three hundreds and 10 half-centuries to his name.

He had a more remarkable ODI record, scoring 3194 runs in 127 matches, including four centuries and 21 half-centuries.

Thirimanne bid farewell to international cricket on July 23, 2023.

“I have given my best as a player, tried my utmost, respected the game, and fulfilled my duties honestly and ethically to my motherland,” Thirimanne posted on Facebook.

“It was a tough decision to make, but I cannot disclose here the many unforeseen factors that led me to this decision, whether willingly or unwillingly.

I take this opportunity to thank the SLC members, my coaches, teammates, physios, trainers, and analysts for their unwavering support and encouragement,” read his retirement post.
