Sri Lanka versus Bangladesh Test Series, 2024

2nd Test Day-3 Highlights:

Sri Lanka did not start their second innings nicely but however they could able to maintain the lead of 455 runs on Day-3

Angelo Mathews steered Sri Lanka clear of a collapse in the second innings.

Sri Lanka scored 531 (1st Innings) & 102/6 (2nd Innings), where as Bangladesh scored 178 (1st Innings) at the stumps of Day-3

So, finally Sri Lanka lead by 455 runs on Day-3.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh surged forward on a dynamic Day 3 in Chattogram, where both teams collectively claimed 15 wickets across the three sessions.

Despite six of those wickets belonging to Sri Lanka in the second innings, they found themselves in a commanding position with a lead of 455 runs.

The day commenced with Bangladesh at 55/1, facing the daunting task of chasing down Sri Lanka’s imposing total from Day 2.

Bangladesh’s opening partnership of Zakir Hasan and night-watchman Taijul Islam aimed to fortify their team’s position in the initial hour of the morning session.

Zakir notched up a half-century, but a moment of brilliance from Vishwa Fernando shattered Bangladesh’s batting lineup.

Vishwa delivered a spectacular inswinging yorker to dismiss Zakir, uprooting his leg stump.

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s lackluster form in the format persisted as he nicked one to Dimuth Karunaratne at short mid-wicket off Prabath Jayasuriya’s bowling.

Taijul fell victim to another inswinging delivery from Vishwa, losing his off-stump.

In just four overs, Bangladesh slumped from 96 for 1 to 105 for 4.

Their troubles deepened when Asitha Fernando trapped Shakib Al Hasan leg before wicket, kickstarting a collapse as Bangladesh crumbled from 126 for 5 to 178 all out.

Opting not to enforce the follow-on, Sri Lanka aimed to extend their dominance over Bangladesh, who already trailed by 353 runs.

However, Hasan Mahmud, the 24-year-old medium pacer, alleviated some concerns by claiming four wickets, reducing the visitors to 102 for 6 in 25 overs at stumps.

Mahmud struck early in the second over, as Karunaratne chopped the ball onto his stumps while attempting a cut shot.

Kusal Mendis followed suit in the next over, playing onto his stumps from Khaled Ahmed.

Opener Nishan Madushka and Angelo Mathews steadied the ship momentarily, adding 45 runs in the 10 overs following Mendis’s dismissal.

However, Madushka’s attempt to secure his sixth boundary ended abruptly as he mistimed a delivery from Mahmud straight to Mehidy Hasan at cover.

This wicket triggered a minor collapse as Sri Lanka slipped from 60 for 3 to 89 for 6, with key batsmen like Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, and Kamindu Mendis departing cheaply.

Nonetheless, Mathews and Prabath Jayasuriya guided Sri Lanka to 102 for 6 by the close of play, with wickets falling in quick succession but the lead continuing to swell, leaving Sri Lanka in the ascendancy at stumps.
