So, finally Bangladesh need 464 runs to win the first Test.

Kamindu Mendis (164) and Dhananjaya de Silva (108) notched their respective second centuries in the match, while Vishwa Fernando (3-13) spearheaded a flurry of late break throughs with the ball, edging Bangladesh closer to a daunting defeat on day three of the inaugural Test in Sylhet.

Chasing an imposing target of 511, Bangladesh faltered to 47/5 by the close of play on the third day.

Beginning the day at 119/5, Sri Lanka lost night watchman Fernando early, but de Silva and Kamindu combined once more, constructing a resilient 173-run partnership for the seventh wicket at a brisk pace, demoralizing the Bangladeshi side.

As their alliance flourished, Bangladesh’s bowlers struggled to maintain their composure, conceding runs freely.

De Silva made history by becoming the first Sri Lankan captain to register twin centuries in a Test match, while Kamindu achieved the feat at a record pace for his country.

With de Silva’s departure, Sri Lanka’s lead extended close to the 400-run mark, and Kamindu continued to heap pressure on Bangladesh, adding a further 67 runs alongside Prabath Jayasuriya to stretch the lead beyond 500.

Bangladesh’s bowlers, with the exception of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4-74), toiled without much success.

Facing an uphill task in their chase, Bangladesh suffered an early collapse as Fernando dismissed Mahmudul Hasan Joy in the opening over, setting the stage for a domino effect.

He further claimed the wickets of Shahadat Hossain and Litton Das, while Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara contributed with a wicket each.
