Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp stroked half-centuries to steady South Africa in their response on Day 2 of the one-off Test against India in Chennai.

The veteran batters guided the visitors to 236 for 4 on Saturday, marking another day of batting dominance.

The hosts had declared their first innings at 603 for 6 in the morning session after overnight batters Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh departed following their respective half-centuries.

The fifth-wicket stand extended to 143 runs before the Indian skipper was trapped leg-before by Tumi Sekhukhune.

Ghosh continued her aggressive batting but fell 14 runs short of a century.

Unlike India, South Africa made a watchful start to their innings before skipper Laura Wolvaardt was trapped leg-before by Sneh Rana.

Anne Bosch and Sune Luus kept the Indian bowlers at bay for over an hour, stitching a 63-run stand for the second wicket before Bosch was undone by a Rana delivery that turned and bounced sharply, taking an edge to slips.

Luus, however, continued to show defiance with the bat on a surface offering little assistance to the bowlers.

Kapp joined her and helped the side reach Tea without further damage.

In the last hour of the day, the off-spin duo of Rana and Deepti Sharma struck twice in quick succession, shifting the momentum back in India’s favor.

Luus was trapped in front of the middle stump by Deepti, and Ghosh took a fine low catch to send Delmi Tucker back for a duck.

Nadine de Klerk, who survived a run-out and was dropped early in her innings, attacked Deepti and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, stroking five boundaries to boost South Africa’s scoring rate late in the day.

She went to stumps unbeaten in the company of Kapp.
