Fiery New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner, aged 37, has announced his retirement from international cricket, culminating a remarkable 12-year Test career.

With 64 Tests for the Black Caps and a pivotal role in securing the inaugural World Test Championship, Wagner leaves behind a legacy marked by 260 Test wickets, ranking fifth in New Zealand’s history.

His departure comes after being omitted from the XI for the upcoming Test series against Australia.

Despite the emotional weight of the decision, Wagner believes it’s the right time to transition.

Expressing gratitude for his journey, he credits his teammates, family, and support system for his success.

As he prepares for his final week with the team, Wagner remains committed to aiding and uplifting his fellow players.

Originally hailing from South Africa, he relocated to Dunedin in 2008 to join Otago for domestic cricket before moving to Papamoa in 2018 to represent the Northern Districts.

His Test debut came against the West Indies in 2012, and five years later, he achieved career-best figures of 7 for 39 against the same opponents in Wellington.

Wagner earned acclaim for his exceptional work ethic, known for bowling lengthy and intense spells even on challenging surfaces.

His accurate bouncers were particularly effective, often unsettling top batters like Steve Smith.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee praised Wagner’s unwavering commitment, stating, “You always knew what you were going to get with Neil, and that was 100 percent commitment to the cause.”

While retiring from international cricket, Wagner will continue to represent the Northern Districts in domestic cricket.

He expressed his intention to play further seasons, either in New Zealand or overseas.
