MLC: Maxwell and Head as well as Smith showcase Aussie flair at the revamped Washington Freedom

Smith is set to join Ricky Ponting’s coaching staff at Washington Freedom.

Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, and Travis Head are poised to become key pillars of a revitalized Washington Freedom lineup for the upcoming second season of Major League Cricket (MLC).

With the recent appointment of Ricky Ponting as head coach, the Freedom are set to infuse some Australian flavor into their roster.

Joining them is New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, as the Freedom undergo significant changes.

Retained foreign recruits include Marco Jansen and Akeal Hossein, ensuring a balance of continuity and fresh talent.

At 34 years old, Smith last represented Australia in T20Is against New Zealand in February, expressing uncertainty about his T20 World Cup prospects.

Despite this, his tactical acumen and leadership qualities will be invaluable to the Freedom, especially with former captain Moises Henriques absent from the retainee list.

Head’s recent impressive performances, highlighted by a scintillating century in the World Cup final against India and a blistering 39-ball hundred in the IPL, make him a player to watch.

Meanwhile, Maxwell, although experiencing a lean patch in the IPL where he opted to sit out matches, remains a reliable asset in white-ball cricket, gearing up for a 4-month T20 journey culminating in The Hundred in August.

In addition to the international stars, the Freedom boast a strong domestic lineup, retaining players like former Pakistan international Mukhtar Ahmed, Andries Gous, Justin Dill, former USA captain Saurabh Netravalkar, Akhilesh Bodugum, and Obus Pienaar.

They have further strengthened their squad by drafting Lahiru Milantha, Ian Holland, Yasir Mohammad, and former Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Amila Aponso in the domestic draft.

Sanjay Govil, owner of the Washington Freedom, expressed his enthusiasm for the team’s new additions, welcoming them to the Freedom family and emphasizing their commitment to delivering top-notch cricket for fans of the MLC.
