Kane Williamson surprised New Zealand cricket on Wednesday (June 19) by announcing that he won’t be renewing his central contract for the 2024-25 season.

Despite this, he remains committed to New Zealand cricket but has stepped down as captain.

The 33-year-old cited an opportunity to play in an overseas league during the New Zealand summer as the reason for his decision, making him unavailable for national duty during that period.

However, he expressed his continued availability to represent New Zealand outside of this timeframe.

“Assisting the team’s progress across formats is a passion of mine, and I aim to continue contributing,” Williamson stated.

“However, pursuing opportunities abroad during our summer means I can’t accept a central contract offer.”

While New Zealand typically prioritize centrally contracted players, CEO Scott Weenink indicated a willingness to accommodate Williamson’s situation.

“We’re making an exception for our greatest-ever batter, given his unwavering commitment to the team,” Weenink explained.

Under Williamson’s leadership, New Zealand faced a disappointing early exit in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Additionally, fast bowler Trent Boult announced his retirement from T20 cricket following the tournament.

Williamson’s decision also prompts the need for a new limited-overs captain for New Zealand, as he had already relinquished Test captaincy in 2022.

Despite some near-misses, his tenure included notable achievements such as winning the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.

In addition to Williamson, pacer Lockie Ferguson has also hinted at his reluctance to sign a central contract.

The final roster is expected to be announced next month.
