Indian Domestic Cricket: Sunil Gavaskar urges a threefold increase in fees for Ranji players.

The former cricketer and current commentator also endorsed extending intervals between Ranji matches.

Sunil Gavaskar, advocating for the enhancement of domestic cricketers’ remuneration, particularly first-class players, has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to triple their pay.

While commending the BCCI’s recent announcement of incentives for Test cricketers, the former India captain emphasized the importance of nurturing the Ranji Trophy, the feeder to the Test team.

Expressing agreement with Rahul Dravid’s characterization of the BCCI’s announcement as rewards rather than mere incentives, Gavaskar stressed the significance of adequately compensating Ranji players to mitigate withdrawals, citing examples like Ishan Kishan.

Speaking at an event by CHAMPS Foundation, commemorating its 25th anniversary, Gavaskar supported the idea of longer intervals between Ranji games, proposing a shift in the Ranji season to October, followed by white-ball tournaments, to ensure player availability and minimize pullouts, especially during the IPL season.

Regarding the future of Test cricket, Gavaskar maintained optimism, foreseeing a continuation of the format albeit with varying lengths of series, suggesting that tours will encompass a blend of Tests, T20Is, and ODIs, rather than exclusively featuring extended Test series.
