So, finally India lead by 105 runs.

A 190-run stand between Sune Luus and Laura Wolvaardt helped South Africa put up a fighting response after being asked to follow on against India on the third day of the Chennai Test.

Led by Sneh Rana’s career-best 8 for 77, South Africa were bundled out for 266 in the first innings before the veteran duo rescued them in the second innings on Sunday.

The visitors went to stumps on 232 for 2, still trailing India by 105 runs at the end of the third day’s play.

Resuming Day 3 on 236 for 4, South Africa lost overnight half-centurion Marizanne Kapp early.

Defending Rana’s offbreak, she was beaten on the outside edge and cleaned up, opening the door for a collapse.

Sinola Jafta departed without scoring, edging to forward short leg.

Deepti Sharma then trapped Anne Derckson leg-before, and Rana ripped through the last three wickets to ensure South Africa could add only 40 runs to their overnight total.

With a lead of 337, India asked the visitors to follow on.

India found early success in the second innings when Deepti trapped Anne Bosch leg-before in the eighth over.

However, Luus and Wolvaardt dropped anchor.

The veteran duo batted past the Lunch and Tea breaks en route to their near-double century stand.

Luus, playing only her third Test, registered her maiden Test century after having already scored 65 in the first innings.

It was the highest partnership for any wicket for South Africa, surpassing the effort of Johmari Logtenberg and Charlize van der Westhuizen (138 runs vs England in 2003).

However, late in the day, Luus fell while attempting to pull Harmanpreet Kaur.

She got an inside edge onto the stumps, handing India their second wicket of the innings after nearly four hours of vigil.

Wolvaardt, however, continued to remain steady, having brought up her maiden Test fifty.

She went to stumps unbeaten on 93, having played a near chanceless knock.

Kapp offered her support towards the end of the day’s play, remaining unbeaten on 15.
