The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Saturday (April 20) that umpire Tanveer Ahmed will not officiate in the upcoming five-match T20I series against the India Women’s team.

Tanveer was at the center of controversy during the 2023 series between the two sides, which saw India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur suspended for two matches following an altercation with the umpire during the final ODI.

Harmanpreet’s actions, including smashing the stumps with her bat and engaging in a heated exchange, led to her suspension, and she later criticized the officiating during the presentation ceremony.

The decision not to include Tanveer in the upcoming series against India Women was made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to prevent any potential targeting of the umpire by the visitors.

A BCB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “We don’t want Tanveer to be at the receiving end of any further incidents, considering the possibility that Indian women cricketers might target him.

Therefore, we decided not to include him for the series involving Bangladesh and India women’s team.”

However, Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu, the chairman of the board’s umpire’s committee, clarified that the decision was made to ensure Tanveer’s availability for the home series against Zimbabwe, which follows the India assignment.

“Yes, Tanveer is not included in the list of match officials for the home series against India women’s team as we want him to be involved in the home series against Zimbabwe, and both the series will be played side by side,” said Iftekhar.

Bangladesh has already commenced preparations in Sylhet, while their Indian counterparts are expected to arrive on April 23 to participate in the series.
