England have reintroduced Mark Wood into the lineup, replacing Ollie Robinson as the sole alteration to their XI for the fifth Test against India.

Despite considerations for an additional seamer in the chilly conditions of Dharamsala, captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum have decided to maintain the same bowling combination that proved effective in Ranchi, after scrutinizing the playing surface once more.

England’s playing XI for the Dharamsala Test comprises:

Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, Shoaib Bashir, Mark Wood, and James Anderson.

This implies that England will maintain a balanced bowling attack with two seamers and two frontline spinners, while also having Joe Root as an additional spin option.

The decision on whether Stokes will contribute with his bowling remains uncertain, despite hints suggesting he might since the beginning of the second Test in Vizag.

“We initially considered a lineup with three seamers and one spinner.

However, upon assessing the pitch yesterday and today, opting for two seamers and two spinners seems more appropriate,” stated Ben Stokes.

“Although we expected more grass on the wicket given the location, it appears to be a batting paradise.

Therefore, the combination of two seamers and two spinners offers versatility, especially when uncertainties arise regarding the pitch conditions throughout the Test match.

We are confident in the team selection.”

Wood has participated in two Tests – Hyderabad and Rajkot – during the series, claiming four wickets with an average of 55.5.

England chose to rest the fast bowler after each appearance, ensuring his freshness for key moments.

“Having a rested Wood on a potentially pace-friendly track has been our strategy when opting for two seamers.

It provides us with the firepower needed to seize control of the game,” explained Stokes.

Conversely, Robinson featured in only one game of the series in Ranchi, where he struggled with a back issue, resulting in diminished bowling speeds and a limited contribution of just 13 overs in the Test match.

“I witness the dedication and effort each player puts into their preparation, and Robinson is no exception.

Despite his setbacks, he worked tirelessly to deliver a match-winning performance last week.

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned, but when you witness the commitment and effort, it’s hard to fault the individual,” said Stokes.

“I see the work ethic of everyone in the group, and Robinson’s determination is evident.

It’s difficult to criticize someone who consistently demonstrates such dedication.”
