Mitchell Marsh is poised to lead Australia in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, following an endorsement from Andrew McDonald, the head coach of the men’s national team.

McDonald, a member of the selection panel alongside chairman George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide, will formally recommend to Cricket Australia that Marsh assume the role of T20I captain.

“I believe Mitchell Marsh is the natural choice.

We just need to finalize a few details.

We’re pleased with his performance leading the T20 team.

He’s our preferred leader for the World Cup, and I anticipate that will be confirmed in due time,” stated McDonald.

Since Aaron Finch’s retirement, Marsh has led the T20I squad in eight matches starting from 2023.

Matthew Wade took over captaincy duties during the five-match T20I series against India when Marsh was rested, and the wicketkeeper-batsman also led the team in the final T20I against New Zealand last month while Marsh, now an all-format player at 32 years old, was rested again.

Australia’s T20I schedule is clear prior to the World Cup, which commences on June 1.

The team, placed in Group B, will kick off against Oman on June 5.

Subsequent matches are scheduled against England, Namibia, and Scotland on June 8, 11, and 15, respectively.
