Bismah Maroof, the former Pakistan cricket captain, has announced her retirement from the sport with immediate effect on Thursday.

The 32-year-old, who represented Pakistan in 136 ODIs and 140 T20Is over an illustrious 18-year career, leaves behind a legacy marked by remarkable achievements.

Despite not reaching a century milestone in international cricket, Maroof holds the record for the highest run tally for Pakistan in both ODIs (3369 runs) and T20Is (2893 runs), as well as the most fifties in each format (21 in ODIs and 12 in T20Is).

Making her international debut at the tender age of 15 in 2006, Maroof assumed leadership roles for the national team, captaining in 34 ODIs and 62 T20Is.

Under her captaincy, Pakistan women’s team witnessed notable successes, with a commendable win percentage, making her one of the most successful captains in Pakistani women’s cricket history.

Throughout her career, Maroof overcame numerous injuries to participate in eight world cups and contributed significantly to Pakistan’s triumphs, including Asian Games gold medals in 2010 and 2014.

Beyond her batting prowess and fielding skills, Maroof also showcased her versatility by claiming 80 international wickets with her part-time legspin.

In her retirement statement, Maroof expressed her gratitude to her family for unwavering support, the Pakistan Cricket Board for providing opportunities, including implementing parental policies that facilitated her dual roles as a cricketer and a mother.

She also acknowledged the fans’ steadfast support and thanked her fellow players, emphasizing the camaraderie shared on and off the field, which she treasures deeply.
