England 302/7 on Stumps of Day-1:

Joe Root notched his 31st Test century, orchestrating England’s recovery from a precarious position to a position of dominance by the end of the first day in Ranchi.

After opting to bat on a challenging pitch, England found themselves struggling at 112/5 in the initial session.

Root, however, orchestrated crucial partnerships, notably a 113-run alliance for the sixth wicket with Ben Foakes (47), which saw England stage a remarkable fightback.

During the second session, Root and Foakes navigated through without losing a wicket, adopting a traditional Test cricket approach devoid of risky shots.

Root’s composed innings, amidst pressure, showcased his ability to adapt to the testing conditions, accumulating his first half-century of the series and providing the backbone for England’s resilience.

Root’s partnership with Foakes proved pivotal after debutant pacer Akash Deep initiated a top-order collapse.

The pitch offered ample assistance to both spinners and pacers, resulting in numerous LBW appeals and reviews, but England persevered through cameos from Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow.

Despite Foakes falling short of his fifty, Root continued to anchor the innings, reaching his milestone 10th Test century against India.

He further consolidated with Ollie Robinson, guiding England past the 300-run mark with an unbeaten 57-run partnership, demonstrating his leadership and batting prowess under pressure.
