“Naveed Nawaz might consider bringing it up with the match referee regarding the caught-behind controversy.”

The TV umpire overturned the caught-behind decision against Soumya Sarkar during the second T20I clash between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

On Wednesday, Sri Lanka’s assistant coach Naveed Nawaz remarked that the overturned caught-behind decision against Soumya Sarkar in the second T20I against Bangladesh significantly impacted the game’s outcome.

The incident unfolded when Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka introduced pacer Binura Fernando into the attack during the fourth over.

As Soumya attempted a pull shot, he edged the ball to Kusal Mendis, prompting the on-field umpire to signal him out caught behind.

However, Soumya immediately requested a review.

“The on-field umpire made the decision, and I believe the TV umpire must have had conclusive evidence to overturn it,” stated Nawaz.

“While we didn’t see the footage, there was a noticeable spike on the big screen.

We may need to discuss this with the match referee to clarify what transpired.

The footage available to us wasn’t sufficient, but I trust the TV umpire had the necessary evidence to overturn the decision.”

Initially, Soumya started to walk off upon seeing the spike on the big screen.

However, TV umpire Masudur Rahman determined that the spike appeared one frame too late to indicate contact between bat and ball, suggesting a gap between them.

Following the decision, Sri Lankan players gathered around the on-field umpire seeking clarification.

Although Soumya’s innings didn’t last much longer, the incident undoubtedly affected the visitors psychologically.

“It was a significant issue, being the first wicket, and it could have provided us with an early advantage.

Especially on a challenging track like this, every wicket counts,” emphasized Naveed.
