NEW DELHI:

Afghanistan asserted their dominance over Ireland in the third ODI on Tuesday, clinching a resounding 117-run victory and sealing a 2-0 series win in the three-match ODI series held in Sharjah.

Mohammad Nabi emerged as a key figure in Afghanistan’s success, making a vital contribution of 48 runs with the bat before demonstrating his bowling prowess by claiming five wickets.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz once again provided a solid start for Afghanistan, scoring 51 off 53 balls before falling to spinner Andy McBrine.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi anchored the innings with a steady 69, ensuring Afghanistan posted a competitive total despite encountering resistance from the Irish bowlers in the final overs.

His all-round performance was instrumental in guiding Afghanistan to victory.

In response, Ireland stumbled early, losing opener Andy Balbirnie cheaply.

Despite skipper Paul Stirling’s effort with a half-century, Ireland struggled to sustain momentum as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Nabi’s spin proved decisive against the Irish batting lineup, as he dismissed key batsmen and achieved his first-ever five-wicket haul in ODIs.

Debutant Nangeyalia Kharote also played a significant role, taking crucial wickets to further diminish Ireland’s chances.

A dramatic collapse witnessed Ireland losing five wickets for just two runs, effectively sealing the fate of the match in Afghanistan’s favor.

The combined efforts of Nabi and Kharote ensured a comprehensive victory for Afghanistan, reaffirming their dominance in the series.

Following the conclusion of the ODI series, both teams will transition to the T20 format with three matches slated in Sharjah on March 15, 17, and 18.

Despite Ireland’s triumph in the preceding one-off Test match, Afghanistan’s dominant display in the ODIs highlights their prowess in limited-overs cricket.
