Unbeaten centuries from Ravindra and Williamson shine on Day 1.

Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson showcased their batting prowess, giving the new and inexperienced South African XI a challenging day in Tests as they solidified New Zealand’s position after the visitors initially made a good start in Mount Maunganui.

The pair’s unbeaten centuries guided New Zealand to a commanding 258 for 2 at stumps, marking Williamson’s 30th Test century and Ravindra’s maiden century in the format.

Debutant right-arm fast bowler Tshepo Moreki had an impressive start to his Test career by dismissing Devon Conway leg before on the first ball, leaving New Zealand at 1 for 1.

Dane Peterson, who consistently troubled New Zealand, broke through next, having Tom Latham caught behind by Bjorn Fortuin.

Ravindra and Williamson joined forces at 39 for 2, initially rebuilding cautiously before accelerating after Lunch to reach 65 for 2.

South Africa created chances but was thwarted by reviews and their own fielding lapses.

Despite the opportunities, New Zealand’s batsmen remained resilient.

Ruan de Swardt missed a chance to claim his maiden wicket as Williamson survived a mistimed shot.

In the final session, Ravindra escaped a tight chance when a mistimed pull went unclaimed by the deep backward square leg fielder.

Both batsmen capitalized on the let-offs, with Williamson reaching his century with a pull off a short ball from Moreki, while Ravindra achieved his milestone in the following over from Peterson.

The duo remained focused, steering New Zealand to stumps unscathed.

The South African bowlers, including Duanne Olivier, Dane Peterson, and Tshepo Moreki, toiled without significant breakthroughs.

Captain Neil Brand also tried his left-arm spin without success as New Zealand ended the day in a commanding position.
