Raza’s four-wicket haul goes unrewarded as Australia secures a thrilling victory to secure a spot in the final
Tom Straker’s impressive six-wicket haul, coupled with Raf MacMillan’s composed unbeaten innings, were the standout performances in Australia’s tense one-wicket victory over Pakistan in the second semifinal of the 2024 U19 World Cup.
Despite chasing a modest target of 180, Australia found themselves in a precarious position at 146/5, with Harry Dixon and Oliver Peake providing stability earlier in the innings.
However, a sudden collapse saw them lose four wickets for just 18 runs, leaving them needing 16 more runs with only one wicket in hand.
In a nail-biting finish, MacMillan held his nerve, supported by Callum Vidler, as they secured the win with just five balls to spare.
Ali Raza’s exceptional bowling spell (4/34) momentarily shifted the momentum in Pakistan’s favor, but they couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity to reach the final.
Pakistan’s batting woes continued as only Azan Awais and Arafat Minhas managed to score fifties, with Minhas being the only one to find fluency.
Despite their efforts, Pakistan’s lack of substantial partnerships and lower-order support resulted in a below-par total.
Straker’s early breakthroughs and later exploits ensured Australia’s comfortable position despite the late scare.
Australia’s victory sets up a final showdown against India at Benoni on Sunday (February 11), while Pakistan will rue their missed opportunity to advance to the finals.
