At the Stumps of Day-1:
Zimbabwe scored 210 (1st Innings) vs Ireland
Zimbabwe crumbled on the opening day in Belfast against Ireland in the one-off Test despite a strong start to their innings.
Zimbabwe’s openers delivered after being asked to bat first, showing no signs of red-ball rustiness, but the home team fought back to bowl them out for just 210.
Ireland’s reply never got underway as rain forced an early end to play.
Joylord Gumbie raced to 26 off 31 at the start, though several boundaries came in streaky fashion.
Prince Masvaure, initially patient, drove Craig Young for his first boundary and gradually grew in confidence.
The bowling changes didn’t work as the openers managed to bat through the opening session, adding 85 runs.
Masvaure then began the post-lunch session with a boundary, but Ireland struck when Gumbie hit one straight to square leg.
After a brief rain delay, play resumed with Masvaure reaching his half-century.
Just when it seemed another substantial partnership might frustrate Ireland, Barry McCarthy bowled a superb delivery to hit the top of off stump, dismissing Dion Myers for just 10.
That breakthrough allowed Ireland to gain control.
Craig Ervine top-edged a shot, giving Craig Young his first wicket, while Curtis Campher took the crucial wicket of the well-set Masvaure, who edged one down the leg side in unfortunate fashion.
Sean Williams attempted to counterattack with a flurry of boundaries, but Andy McBrine’s double-wicket over put Zimbabwe under severe pressure.
In the following over, Mark Adair opened his account before the tail eventually folded.
From a strong position of 143/2, Zimbabwe lost their final eight wickets for just 67 runs before rain arrived again.
