1st Test
Day-1 Highlights:
Rain has shortened the first day after South Africa opts to bat
Rain played spoilsport for the majority of Day One at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago, with only 15 overs of play possible as South Africa reached 45 for 1.
The visitors opted to bat first, sending openers Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi to the crease.
Kemar Roach took the new ball, and in overcast conditions, Markram was struck on the thigh pad off the first delivery as it sharply angled in.
Markram’s first boundary came with an edge to third man off Roach.
The West Indies bowlers were inconsistent with their lines in the opening burst, allowing the batters to leave many deliveries alone.
Spin was introduced in the eighth over by Gudakesh Motie, and de Zorzi attacked, hitting two sixes off the left-arm spinner with a slog sweep over mid-wicket and another over long-on.
He capitalized on any loose deliveries, scoring boundaries in successive overs off Seales and Motie.
Jason Holder struck gold with his first ball, dismissing skipper Markram.
The ball, bowled outside off, came in sharply off the deck and uprooted the off stump.
Markram, caught off guard, didn’t move his feet, and the ball went through the bat-pad gate.
Soon after, unrelenting rains saturated the covers.
Play was called off just before the scheduled tea break as the weather had the final say.
Play is set to commence 30 minutes earlier today (Day 2) to make up for the time lost due to rain on Day 1.
