3rd Test
Day-1 Afternoon Session Highlights:
Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva has helped West Indies team to build the partnership for the 6th Wicket
At the Tea of Day-1:
West Indies scored 194/5 vs England
Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva spearheaded West Indies’ recovery against England in the second session of the third Test at Edgbaston, following a collapse that saw the visitors lose quick wickets around Lunch, including that of half-centurion Kraigg Brathwaite.
Holder was unbeaten on 42 and Da Silva on 35 as they forged an unbroken 79-run stand, taking West Indies to 194/5 at Tea on Day 1.
After losing quick wickets leading into the Lunch break, West Indies faced further trouble as the well-set Brathwaite and Kavem Hodge fell in rapid succession.
Brathwaite, who had been in good form, gloved a short delivery from Mark Wood down the leg-side to the ‘keeper.
Hodge was undone by a well-judged delivery from Chris Woakes; having moved the ball away in his previous over, Woakes bowled a straight one, and Hodge, shoulder arms, was bowled for 13.
From a solid 76/0, West Indies slipped to 115/5, putting the middle order under pressure.
Holder and Da Silva steadied the ship with a patient partnership, during which England lost a couple of reviews.
Shoaib Bashir was introduced in the 44th over and was greeted with a boundary through midwicket by Da Silva.
A paddle shot from Holder off Bashir raised the half-century stand for the sixth wicket, and Holder continued to attack the spinner, hitting a four and a six off consecutive deliveries, followed by another boundary in the next over.
They also navigated a challenging over from Wood, who bowled short deliveries, to head into the break unbeaten.
Earlier, after West Indies chose to bat, Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson targeted the full length to the openers, occasionally beating the bat.
Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis responded well, dealing with a barrage of short balls from Wood and Ben Stokes to safely navigate the first hour.
The openers registered their third consecutive 50-plus stand and scored regular boundaries, despite not always being in full control.
However, their partnership ended when Atkinson had Louis edge to the ‘keeper for 26.
Kirk McKenzie started confidently with three boundaries off Atkinson, but his innings was cut short by a fast delivery from Wood that swung in, beat his defense, and uprooted his middle stump.
Alick Athanaze fell on the last ball before Lunch, inside-edging a pull onto the stumps off Atkinson.
