A third consecutive 50-plus partnership between Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis helped West Indies start well in the first session of the third Test, but quick wickets late in the session allowed England to gain the upper hand.

Brathwaite was batting on 56, with West Indies reaching Lunch at 97/3 on Day 1 at Edgbaston.

Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson bowled full to the West Indies openers, seeking the edge and occasionally beating the bat.

Brathwaite capitalized on scoring opportunities, hitting the first boundary off his pads from Atkinson, followed by two fours off Woakes with a straight drive and a cover drive.

Mark Wood entered the attack in the 10th over, starting with a full length before bowling short to Brathwaite, who top-edged it for a four.

Louis struck two fours off Woakes before Ben Stokes replaced him.

Stokes and Wood bowled short-pitched deliveries, but the West Indies openers were up to the task and survived the first hour without losing a wicket.

Atkinson returned and was cover-driven for a four by Louis, while Stokes found the edge of Brathwaite’s bat, only for the ball to evade third slip and reach the boundary.

Louis top-edged Atkinson for a four after being hurried into a pull, and Brathwaite sliced a four off Stokes to reach his fifty.

Atkinson broke the opening stand when Louis edged to the ‘keeper for 26.

Brathwaite then sliced a four off Wood, and Kirk McKenzie started confidently with three boundaries in an over off Atkinson, driving and cutting with precision.

McKenzie’s brisk innings ended when a quick delivery from Wood swung in, beat his defense, and uprooted the middle stump.

Alick Athanaze fell on the last ball before Lunch, inside edging a pull onto the stumps to give Atkinson his second wicket.
