2nd Test

Mark Wood has taken James Anderson’s place in the England squad for the second Test

Mark Wood last played in a Test match in March 2024.

With James Anderson retiring after the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s, England has added pacer Mark Wood to the squad for the second Test, starting on July 18 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

Wood, who played three of the five Tests against India earlier this year, was part of England’s T20 World Cup squad and featured in five matches.

However, he did not play in England’s last two matches, including a semifinal defeat to India by 68 runs.

Gus Atkinson, the 26-year-old Surrey pacer, debuted in the Lord’s Test and picked up 12 wickets—a seven-wicket haul in the first innings followed by five in the second.

Besides Anderson and Atkinson, Chris Woakes was the other pace option in the eleven for the Lord’s Test, while Ben Stokes proved his bowling fitness by delivering 18 overs across the two innings.

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was also part of the eleven but did not bowl a single over.
