All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has officially resigned from his role as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain.

The 26-year-old submitted a formal letter to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday (July 11), requesting immediate relief from the position.

SLC subsequently issued a press release confirming Hasaranga’s decision, noting that he cited the move as being “in the best interests of the team.”

“In my resignation letter, I emphasized that Sri Lanka will always have my unwavering commitment as a player, and I will continue to support my team and leadership,” Hasaranga stated.

Sri Lanka’s recent T20 World Cup campaign ended disappointingly with their failure to advance past the group stage.

Hasaranga himself has faced disciplinary issues, including suspensions from both the ICC and SLC.

Most recently, he was charged for equipment-related violations during the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL).

The Sri Lankan team is yet to announce Hasaranga’s successor as captain, who will face their first challenge in the upcoming home series against India.
