Tim Southee has stepped down as New Zealand’s Test captain, with Tom Latham named as his full-time successor, New Zealand Cricket announced on Wednesday (October 2).
The decision follows New Zealand’s recent 2-0 Test series defeat in Sri Lanka.
Latham’s first assignment as captain will be the upcoming home series against India.
Southee, New Zealand’s premier fast bowler, has played 102 Test matches since his debut in 2008, taking 382 wickets.
He took over the captaincy from Kane Williamson in December 2022, leading the team in 14 Tests, with a record of six wins, six losses, and two draws.
Reflecting on his decision to step down, Southee emphasized that it was made with the team’s best interests in mind.
“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in such a cherished format has been a tremendous honor.
I’ve always prioritized the team throughout my career, and I believe stepping down is the best decision for the team moving forward,” he said.
“I’m focused on getting back to my best on the field, taking wickets, and helping New Zealand win matches.
I’ll continue supporting my teammates, particularly the young bowlers coming through, and I wish Tom all the best as he takes on this new role.”
New Zealand coach Gary Stead praised Southee’s leadership and contribution.
“Tim is an exceptional player and leader, respected by everyone in the squad.
His decision to step down is a mark of his humility and dedication to the team.
We still see him playing a significant role in our Test side moving forward.”
New Zealand, the inaugural World Test Championship winners, currently sit sixth in the WTC standings.
They will face top-ranked India in a three-match Test series, with the games scheduled in Bengaluru (October 16-20), Pune (October 24-28), and Mumbai (November 1-5).
