In a media release on Tuesday (March 12), the BCCI confirmed that Rishabh Pant has been given the green light by their medical team to participate in IPL 2024.
After enduring several injuries from a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman underwent a rigorous 14-month rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy.
Although the board declared Pant “fit as a wicketkeeper-batsman for the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” it remains uncertain whether he will initially take up the keeping duties for the Delhi Capitals, whom he is also slated to lead, succeeding David Warner, who filled in for Pant last season.
The 2024 IPL season marks Pant’s comeback to competitive cricket since the two-Test series against Bangladesh in late 2022, just before his accident while driving to his hometown in Roorkee on December 30.
Meanwhile, the BCCI also announced that fast bowler Prasidh Krishna will miss the tournament after undergoing surgery on his left proximal quadriceps tendon.
This will be the second consecutive IPL season Krishna misses for the Rajasthan Royals due to injuries.
On a brighter note for the Royals, they strengthened their Indian fast bowling lineup by acquiring Avesh Khan from the Lucknow Super Giants in a trade deal, with batter Devdutt Padikkal moving in the opposite direction.
Additionally, Gujarat Titans’ pace spearhead Mohammed Shami will sit out the entire tournament post-surgery on his right heel.
The BCCI medical team will monitor his recovery closely, with India’s T20 World Cup campaign looming right after the IPL.
