Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) has officially announced the appointment of former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed as the new fast-bowling coach of the men’s national cricket team on Saturday (March 16).
The appointment is on a short-term basis, with Javed set to work with the team until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in June this year.
Confirming Javed’s immediate on-boarding, SLC CEO Ashley De Silva expressed confidence in the Pakistan legend’s ability to enhance Sri Lankan cricket in all aspects.
“We extend a warm welcome to Aaqib and are confident that his vast international experience, both as a player and coach, will greatly benefit our bowlers as we prepare for the upcoming major international competitions, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” stated De Silva in the official press release from SLC.
Javed brings with him individual excellence and a winning mentality to Sri Lanka’s coaching staff.
The 51-year-old was a crucial part of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad and amassed more than 200 international wickets during his playing career.
As a coach, Javed has achieved significant success, guiding the Pakistan U19 squad to World Cup glory in 2004 and serving as the bowling coach of the senior men’s team during their T20 World Cup victory in 2009.
Furthermore, Javed played a pivotal role as the head coach of the UAE team when they gained ODI and T20 status.
Currently, he holds positions with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), serving as the Director of Cricket Operations and head coach simultaneously.
