Sri Lanka lost their openers in pursuit of a challenging target of 348 in the second Test against South Africa.

Dinesh Chandimal looked solid for the visitors by Tea, but with Sri Lanka still needing 288 runs to win, the home side would back themselves to seal the series.

The session began well for South Africa, with Kagiso Rabada hitting back-to-back boundaries in search of quick runs, as the hosts had only two wickets remaining.

However, Lahiru Kumara made a strong comeback by dismissing Rabada in the same over.

Keshav Maharaj and Dane Paterson responded by hammering a six each in the following over to continue their attack.

Sri Lanka’s misery continued as Paterson struck a flurry of boundaries before a yorker from Asitha Fernando brought an end to his aggressive knock.

Sri Lanka then received a major blow when Pathum Nissanka was adjudged leg-before-wicket in the second over.

While he successfully overturned the decision, Dimuth Karunaratne wasn’t as fortunate, falling to a plumb LBW from Rabada.

Sri Lanka found some momentum when Nissanka and Chandimal hit three boundaries off an over from Marco Jansen, followed by one more off Rabada in the next over.

Chandimal then took control, hitting successive boundaries off Maharaj.

In an ideal scenario, the visitors would have wanted to head into the break with just one wicket down, having gained some momentum.

However, against the run of play, Nissanka chased a wide delivery from Paterson and edged it behind, allowing South Africa to regain the advantage.
