South Africa claimed another session in the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka to regain control.

A strong morning session, in which they picked up five wickets, helped them claw back into the contest, and they followed it up with another solid session, extending their lead beyond 100.

The session began with Prabath Jayasuriya adding a few boundaries in streaky fashion.

However, it was at the other end that South Africa made a breakthrough, with 35-year-old Dane Paterson claiming his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket, as Vishwa Fernando edged one behind.

South Africa quickly wrapped things up, with Keshav Maharaj dismissing Jayasuriya in the following over to take a 30-run lead.

South Africa made a positive start to their second innings, with Aiden Markram hitting a boundary in the second over.

Runs flowed freely as they reached 26 in just five overs.

After surviving the first spell of the new ball, the openers continued strongly after the drinks break.

Tony de Zorzi glanced one down to fine leg off Asitha Fernando, while Markram punched the same bowler down the ground for another boundary, bringing up a 50-run opening partnership.

Sri Lanka had a brief respite when Jayasuriya’s delivery spun sharply to beat de Zorzi’s defense and crash into the stumps.

Ryan Rickelton then started well with a couple of boundaries before Tea.

With nine wickets still in hand, South Africa has a commanding position, and Sri Lanka will need a massive final session to make a comeback.
