Temba Bavuma once again displayed fluency right from the start during the challenging morning session.

At The Lunch of Day-1:

South Africa scored 82/3 (1st Innings) vs Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka struck three times in the morning session on Day 1 at St George’s Park, but a solid, unbeaten partnership of 38 runs between Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton helped South Africa reach 82 for 3 at lunch on Thursday (December 5).

Choosing to bat first, South Africa were quickly on the back foot as Asitha Fernando caught Toni de Zorzi off guard with the first ball of the match.

The South African opener missed a low delivery while attempting a flick and was struck on the pads.

Despite Sri Lanka celebrating prematurely, Zorzi reviewed the decision but was dismissed on umpire’s call.

Although there was movement for the pacers, Aiden Markram responded with a couple of boundaries off Fernando, getting South Africa’s innings going.

Markram, looking in control, was eventually undone by a nipbacker from Lahiru Kumara, which surprised him with pace and cleaned him up, giving Kumara his 100th Test wicket.

Kumara struck again shortly after, sending Tristan Stubbs back to the pavilion.

Stubbs, attempting to attack a short, wide delivery, edged it to the wicketkeeper, leaving South Africa at 44 for 3.

While Rickelton remained cautious, Bavuma was quick to seize scoring opportunities.

Bavuma was particularly effective between point and third man, hitting three boundaries off Prabath Jayasuriya and Fernando in that region.

He also pulled Fernando’s short delivery for a four.

The most emphatic shot of the session came when Bavuma pulled Jayasuriya for a six off the backfoot in the final over before lunch.
