1st Test
Day-4 Afternoon Session Highlights:
Marco Jansen’s career-best performance has lead the South Africa team to a dominant victory
South Africa scored 191 (1st Innings) & 366/5d (2nd Innings), where as Sri Lanka scored 42 (1st Innings) & 282 (2nd Innings).
So, finally South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 233 runs.
South Africa wrapped up a dominant 233-run victory in the first Test after taking just half a session on the fourth afternoon to pick up the remaining four wickets.
This was their first win over Sri Lanka in Durban and their second-largest victory margin over the island nation, providing a significant boost as they aim to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final.
Marco Jansen played a pivotal role, claiming the final two wickets to finish with an impressive 11-wicket haul, marking his first 10-wicket match in Test cricket.
He also became the first left-arm seamer for South Africa since re-admission to take a 10-fer, with Brett Schultz’s 9/106 at Colombo SSC in 1993 being the previous best.
The match was concluded with a remarkable caught-and-bowled effort from Gerald Coetzee to dismiss a well-set Dinesh Chandimal on 83.
Keshav Maharaj followed up with the dismissal of Vishwa Fernando in the slips, setting the stage for Jansen’s late heroics.
Jansen struck with his fourth delivery of a new spell, getting Kusal Mendis to edge a rising short ball behind.
Asitha Fernando was then bowled out dramatically, sealing South Africa’s victory and a 1-0 series lead.
Earlier, Sri Lanka battled through tough overs from Kagiso Rabada, reaching Lunch on Day 4 at 220/7, having added 117 runs for the loss of just one wicket.
Keshav Maharaj was the only bowler to break through in the session, dismissing Dhananjaya de Silva, while Rabada posed a constant threat but could not find a breakthrough.
De Silva and Chandimal had started the day with solid defense, building a 50-run partnership by the 15th over, with both batters reaching their individual fifties and looking set for more.
De Silva even struck a six off Maharaj, who bowled tight but failed to dismiss either batter.
However, their 95-run partnership ended just before Lunch, when de Silva edged one to midwicket.
