The third Test between England and Sri Lanka progressed rapidly, with the post-lunch session on Day 2 delivering high drama.

In 27 overs, Sri Lanka surged ahead at over five runs per over but lost five crucial wickets, once again finding themselves in trouble.

Kamindu Mendis (34* off 37) will need to stabilize the innings after Pathum Nissanka (64 off 51) entertained the crowd with a sparkling display of stroke play.

Much like Sri Lanka on Day 1, England’s bowlers started erratically, missing their lines despite swing and seam movement.

Nissanka capitalized with exquisite shots, but Sri Lanka gifted England a breakthrough when Dimuth Karunaratne was run out during a period when England appeared off their game.

However, once the hosts found their rhythm, their seamers caused trouble, sparking a mini-collapse.

Chris Woakes induced an edge from Kusal Mendis, and Olly Stone took the vital wickets of Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal.

Amid these blows, debutant Josh Hull claimed his maiden international wicket, dismissing Nissanka with a sharp catch by Woakes at short cover.

Sri Lanka tumbled from 70/1 to 93/5, teetering on the brink of a first-innings collapse.

While that threat still looms, Kamindu, along with captain Dhananjaya de Silva (20* off 44), managed to prevent further damage, keeping Sri Lanka just about afloat in the contest.
